About The Artist

Denise Chapple

I live the most beautiful country town of Baringhup. My perfect life! My maiden name was Denise Knuckey. I was educated at Presentation Convent, Windsor. My teenage years were spent figure skating and upon leaving school I studied nursing at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

In my twenties I took up tonal painting and was fortunate enough to study with Ron Crawford, David Moore, and Lee Machalek, all wonderful tonal painters. Art has been a lifetime journey. Eight years ago I moved to the country where I live with three Chihuahuas, one Poodle and five chooks in an environment of great peace and freedom.

I teach tonal painting twice a week and I paint daily in my studio. I also participate in landscape painting in the summer months. I am particularly interested in Chinese and Japanese art. I am an avid reader and like most types of literature but especially biographies, art, and garden books. I have three children and four grandchildren.

Associations

Denise is a Full Member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors.

The MSWPS has a long and proud history as the oldest surviving women’s art group in Australia. It was formed in 1902 by a group of former students from the Art School at the National Gallery of Victoria. It aims to provide help and encouragement to women artists. Many women have been members of the Society.  Radicals and conservatives, painters, sculptors, printmakers, china painters, craft workers, commercial artists and designers, professionals and amateurs, women artists of varying skills and philosophies worked together as members.
